Hi, I'm Jason Kay for Expert Village. In this segment we're going to discuss the "press roll" which is which is also known as the multiple bounce roll also known as the buzz roll. In any case, it's a drum roll, and another name is called the closed roll, in a double stroke roll, which we did in the last segment, it's called an open roll. It sounds open; you can hear all the notes. Now, in a press role, we literally "press" the drumstick into the drum head, and get as many bounces as you can, hence the title, "multiple bounce roll." The press roll is done often on the edge of the drum or the practice pad, because that's where the head is tighter. It's all looser here that it is here. So you get more bounce. I'm going to demonstrate it on a snare drum as well for you. On a press roll, we tighten up right here and we hold the stick pretty tight; again fingers off the stick but we want to tighten up here because you kind of need that to get the stick bouncing. So, very important to squeeze a little tighter here than usual when you do this roll.
