Hi! I'm Melanie McElroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village and today we are working with Daschund. Today we are going to start working with a little dapple dachshund puppy. Now this little puppy if you can see is very intense on her environment. In fact, her whole body is quivering with excitement because she saw a squirrel out here about 30 minutes ago. So what we need to do with this little Dapple daschund is to teach her to pay attention. Now I don't really want to call this little puppy's name right now because this dachshund would ignore me so I would be setting her up to fail. Instead I am going to get out some yummy treats I know she likes and I am going to get her attention with those treats and then as she starts to pay attention to me, I will say her name, mark when she looks at me, makes eye contact, and then she gets the reward. This is the beginning of teaching this dachshund how to pay attention. Sometimes a whistle helps, sometimes it doesn't. I sure am glad I didn't try the name game here. Little puppy, good. Now she's looking at the treat and I want her to look at me. Good. As soon as I see her eyes come to mine, that's when I mark it. Now I will introduce the name. Good! If you noticed I brought my hand up to my eye, that visual signal really helped this daschund puppy know what to do. Again, I am going to use the food as a lure this time. Good! Again, I do not want to set her up to fail by repeating the commands over and over again. If you are working with your daschund, please check out the pre-training videos on relationship and leadership before you start trying to teach your dachshund how to pay attention. There is definitely a squirrel over there. So we might go inside and teach this daschund how to sit.
