How to Train Your Wheaten Terrier to Come When Called

Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village. It’s time to work with a Wheaten Terrier. Let’s work on recall with our Wheaten Terrier. Recall is simply coming when called. It’s the number one thing, people want their dogs to do, but it can be the most difficult, the reason being that we often call our dogs to come, when they’re extremely distracted or they know they can get away with not coming. So you’re setting your dog up to fail by giving them a command that you can’t enforce or they’re not motivated to do. So from a very young age please work with your puppies, your Wheaten Terrier or any breed and capitalize on the fact that they want to come to you, always connect coming with something positive. Now Ms. Maddy is one of the most mellow Wheatens I have ever seen. While she’s lying, I’m going to back up a little bit, good girl, I’m going to go ahead and mark that and reward it, because she obviously wants to be with me. Here she is acting kind of like a puppy wanting to be around me. Here, good girl, now you can use the word come or the word here, whatever you prefer. At Taurus Training we use the word here, because most people have use the word come in situations where their dogs didn’t come so we use a new word, because come means run away faster. Sit, good, here, good, okay, here, good. So I’ll mark as soon as she starts coming to me. Now keep in mind that your terrier may not be this focused on you, one thing that is great to use is the squeaky toy to get your dog’s attention. Use it to get their attention, say the word come or here, as they start coming to you and reward them with a toy when they get to you. Then you can try the toy for a treat and start the game all over again. We’re using a game here to teach come. However the recall is extremely serious. Your dog’s life could depend on it. So please work on the recall with your Wheaten Terrier.
