How to Count 1/4 Note Rests

Along with quarter notes, we have quarter rests. Now a rest is played in the same amount of time as a note, it's actually not played, it's rested, but it's counted the same amount of time. So, in the example you see, we have the quarter rest on beat number "4", 1, 2, 3, 4...1, 2, 3, rest...1, 2, 3, 4...1, 2, 3, 4. Now we can also put that quarter note rest on any beat, let's put it on "1" now...1, 2, ready, go...rest, 2, 3, 4...rest, 2, 3, 4. Notice you keep the same time going, you don't say rest, 2, 3, 4...rest, 2, 3, 4, it's got to be even, always even, 1, 2, 3, 4...1, 2, 3, 4...1, 2, 3, 4. Now is also a good time to let you know that counting out loud is very important, it helps you develop your timekeeping skills and it also helps you to really understand how you're doing with your music, how you're reading what's going on, you need to know where you are. So by counting, you know where you are in the measure of the song, so count out loud while you're practicing these.
