How to Size Clothing for a Child

Hi. Welcome to Expert Village. I'm Gretchen Soares and today we're going to be discussing how to shop for children's clothing. In this clip we're going to talk about sizing of children's clothing. We start with zero months or newborn and that's the first size period and it's also the first size in the infant size range. Infant size range is going to go from zero months to twenty four months. And you're going to have a breakdown of zero to three or zero to six month, three to six, six to twelve, nine, twelve, eighteen and twenty four months. So there's seven different sizes to choose from. And the month gives you a rough estimate. Usually by the time they hit twenty four months children have leveled off and are in pretty consistent sizing but in the earlier months it very much depends on the size of the child. A chunky little baby that's four months old is probably going to be in a six to nine month clothes range whereas a smaller more petite child will still be in the three to six month range. So just to give you an idea of the size ranges we're going from, we're going to go from zero month at this point which is going to be something along this lines, all the way up to twenty four month and I'm going to grab something there. So here's a twenty four month so you can see the size difference. There's quite a bit of difference in that size. So we're going from a newborn to an almost two year old in the infant size ranging. After infant sizing we go into toddler sizing. That would be 2T, 3T, 4T and 5T. In toddler sizing, there is a lot more difference in the sizes. This is a 2T jumper and this is a 5T jumper. So, as you can see, there is a lot more difference in the sizing. In this area, children grow faster. They are going to become taller quicker, but not so much wider. There's not so much difference in the width of these garments but there's a lot of difference in the length of the garments. After toddler sizing, we go into children's sizing so that's going to be the children sizes 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16. That's going to take you all the way up to the early teen years. Usually about age twelve to thirteen is when they start going into junior clothing and that's a whole other different range. In this range, we're not going to have as much gradation in sizing but, as you can see, this is a children's size 6 and this is a children's size 16 so there is a fair amount of difference. So we're going to go from approximately age five to approximately age twelve in this size range.
