Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village and now we’re going to talk about training an Akita. And now we’re going to teach this Akita how to come. Now this is how Akita’s usually are with their owners. They have their own agenda and it’s hard to get them to pay attention. So it’s very, very important with your Akita puppy that you reinforce he or she coming to you constantly, make it a very fun event, good girl. So I’m going to reinforce her simply checking in with me. Good, so I’m about to tell her the word come, and then I’m going to use my body language to encourage her to come to me. Come, good girl, come on. Now that was a pretty slow response and I was tempted to reel her in with the leash, but I don’t want to do that, don’t force your dog to come to you. It should always be a positive thing. The way I can speed her up a little bit is by using food as a lure. Now using food as a lure especially with the come command is fine with some breeds. But remember you’re going to have to fade the lure later so switch to random reinforcement as soon as you can and check up the video on fading the lure. Come, I don’t want to repeat the comment because she is settled in, come, good girl. So see, you have to have a lot of patience when you are teaching your Akita to come. We’ll try it one more time. Dakota, come, good girl. So I got a lot quicker response. Of course we’re only going 3 or 4 steps, but we’re outside, it’s a blustery fall day and the distractions are little bit too high for her to come more than just a couple of steps. So start small with few distractions and build up to your Akita being able to come across the yard. Right, Dakota.
