Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village and now we’re going to talk about training an Akita. And now it’s time to teach an Akita how to heel. Akita’s are very large powerful dogs as you can see from Dakota here and they love to pull. So it’s important to choose the right equipment for your Akita, if you haven’t already please check out the video on equipment and chose something that’s best for you and your dog, always want to use the most general thing that’s effective. I have a no-pull harness on this Akita. If you put a harness on, a regular harness on an Akita you’re actually going to teach them to pull harder because they’re pulling against it. But this particular product, a no-pull harness actually causes them to back off a little bit. We’ll see how well it works. So I don’t know if Dakota knows heel, but I’m going to go for it and see, heel, very nice, she’s walking in right behind me I’m going to make a turn, always keep the leash loose… come on, yeah there’s a lot going on. Now I can see that I have to use the harness a little bit to pull, but all I’m doing is physically manipulating her over here, in between me and an Akita, the Akita is going to win. So I’m going to use some food here especially because we have so many distractions, good girl, good, very nice. So I’m teaching her exactly what I want her to do. Of course I got a standstill when I gave her the treat. So I need to use little bitty pieces of treats here. Now of course training a heel this way can make the dog dependent upon you carrying treats. So you’ll definitely want to back off. I don’t want to say her… good, I didn’t want to say her name there because I didn’t think she would look. I think she’s intent on the doggie in the window. Dakota, come on. Now one thing that works particularly well with Akita’s and other Northern breeds is breaking into a run. Because you’ll trigger their flight response or chase response and that way it’s fun to follow along with you. This Akita definitely has her own agenda today. So I’m not going to get anywhere with the heel. But at least I have shown you how to deal with some difficult situations trying to teach your Akita how to heel.
