Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village and now we’re going to talk about training an Akita. And now it’s time to teach this Akita how to sit. This is Dakota and I know that Dakota knows that but I’ve never worked with her. So we’ll see how it goes. Now since I think this dog knows the word sit, I’m going to use a little bit different technique. If this doesn’t work for your dog then check out one of the other breed videos on how to teach a dog to sit. What I’m going to do with Dakota, this Akita is use some body language and go ahead and try it and see what happens. I’m going to get her attention first, Dakota, good, sit. Now whether Dakota is testing me or she doesn’t know sit, it doesn’t matter. What this shows me is that I need to try something else. I’m going to try hand signal next. Dakota, good, now I had so much trouble getting eye contact earlier, I’m going to go ahead and reward that… MMM! Yummy treat, Dakota. Oh! I can see no response. We’ll go back to use food as a lure, show her the treat, nose up. Now some people would say at this point that this Akita is being stubborn, I don’t think so, I think we just need a little more patience, come here. Now I’m putting it up over her head and she’s thinking about it, looking a little nervous and little frustrated, the respiration is going up, come on, I’m just going to be patient, sit, good, alright, yummy treats. So let’s see if we can get a little bit faster response this time, okay, come on. Ah! The wheels are turning, come on. This Akita’s response is telling me that this environment is too much for her. I need to back off and move to a place with less distractions to set her up to succeed. There’s just too much around here for her to focus on and it’s making her nervous. So I’m going to move inside and try to teach this Akita how to sit.
