Teach Your Big Dog to Recognize Her Name With These Dog Obedience Training Tips

Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village and now we’re going to talk about training an Akita. This is Dakota. She is a gorgeous example of an Akita. They’re lovely dogs. They’re also bred to be a little independent. So sometimes they have their own agenda, but you can figure out a way to motivate your Akita. First thing we need to do is teach Dakota to pay attention. Now she knows I have the treat pouch here, but there are plenty of distractions around for us to practice the name game. So I’m going to wait until she looks away. Oh! Oh! She might do too well. Now she’s offering me some awfully nice behaviors trying to get the treat but I want her to do what I wanted to do. Dakota, good, now that was typical Akita I said her name and she deliberately looked away. Dakota, now she’s looking at the treat, looking away. I’m going to wait until she makes eye contact. Good, she will figure it out, she’s smart. I’m going to try to get her to the side so it’s easier to see, come here… come, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, Dakota, good. Now there I had to bring my hand up to my eyes so she knew exactly where to look. So I’m going to teach her more exactly what I want her to do. Dakota, good, there I lured her eyes up to mine, so she knows exactly what to do. She so is focused on the treats, I need to hide them, I need to switch hands occasionally. Dakota, she cheated, good, good, Dakota, good. So, Dakota is an example of an Akita that really needs help knowing exactly what I wanted to do. I will show her the treat, lead it to my eyes and I want to make the treats random pretty quickly so she doesn’t become reliant upon that because we have to fade the lure later on. If you haven’t already check out the video on fading the lure because that’s something Dakota definitely needs. Right girl.
