Securing a Hook for Fly Tying

The first step in tying this woolly bugger is we're going to mash the barb down with our pliers here. Just get that plier right over the barb, just kind of give a nice little, you kind of heard that one, snapped off, sometimes, just depending on the material that the hook's made out of, it might just break off, a lot of times it will just mash down, but it should be fairly smooth once you've got it done there. The hook we've picked for this woolly bugger is what we call a long shank hook. There's a lot of space between here and here because this fly has a fairly long body, so you want to use a long shank hook for tying the woolly bugger. Next thing is to just get our hook in the vice. Adjust it up here and get it pretty snug, and then I use the back adjustment to get it down really tight. I like to give a kind of a pluck. Ok, I know it's in there good. It's not going anywhere, so now I am ready to start tying.
