Backing will come in several different strengths. Most common will be twenty pound test, but you can also find fifteen pound test, thirty pound test, and fifty pound test. Obviously, the larger the strength, the higher the pound test, the larger the diameter will be, so you'll get less on your reel. So, if the most important thing is getting as much backing on that reel as possible, I would go with fifteen or twenty pound test backing. If you don't really need that much backing, you're not going after fish that are going to be pulling a lot of line off the reel, you might go up to thirty pound backing and then it will fill your reel up with less backing. The backing should be stronger than anything else in your system. So, say, the end of your leader is twenty pound test, you want to make sure your backing is stronger than twenty pound test, because if you hook a huge fish and he pulls out all your line and he comes to your backing, you want to make sure that something else further down the line is going to break before your backing does, so you don't lose everything.
