Fly Fishing Backing Material

Ok, so our backing is actually really important and what it's made out of is really important also. You'll notice if you run it through your fingers that it's a braided material. Nowadays, they use a braided nylon, it used to be made out of a braided Dacron, and the reason why the braided material is much better than say filling up your reel with mono-filament is because there's no stretch to it for one. It's really strong and there's no stretch, and the reason stretch is a bad thing, like say mono-filament, if you put mono-filament on your reel under pressure, because it stretches, when you release the pressure, it will expand and it actually could expand enough to crack the spool of your reel, which is bad, but the other problem you have with stretchy backing material is that if you do have a big fish pulling against that line, and it's under tension, the stretchy material can actually cut into itself and bind on your reel. So, you want to make sure you get a braided backing, most likely braided nylon, some places you might actually be able to find braided Dacron, but you definitely want braided backing, not a solid mono-filament backing.
