Tools for Face Painting

Okay, so now you've got your paints, the next thing you'll need are some brushes and other applicators to put your paint on your victim, I mean the child. You're going to want just a few brushes to start. A really nice brush to use is a good round brush. You can experiment on how soft you like your bristles, I personally don't like a real stiff bristled brush, I kind of like something in between. When you press your brush on your hand, you want the bristles to stay fairly close together and come to a tip at the end. That's great because you'll be making swirls and outlining and you're not going to want it to be too wide. Try to avoid the multi packages of the plastic children's craft paint brushes. They're going to be too stiff and not very easy to work with. Spend a little bit of money on your brushes, you'll be happy you did and they will last a long time if you take care of them. The next thing you're going to want aside from a good round brush is a smaller brush for detailed work. When you're doing just small things on children's faces, you'll be making little happy faces, outlining butterflies, putting eyes on frogs and turtles. You're going to want something you make those smaller lines with. Then you can have fun and get into some specialty brushes and applicators. This is called a dotter, another thing for eyes. You can make really small dots if you press very lightly, or very large dots by pressing all the way down. That's fun for adding some details on butterflies! This is a fan brush which is very popular for making butterflies. All you do is load it with a couple colors, press it each direction on the child' cheek, add a little body and you have a very, quick, easy butterfly. This is called a smoothie blender. These are great for full faced butterflies. Use a little shimmer powder or eye shadow; wipe it around the child's face for a butterfly mask. Goes on nice and soft and easy and is very comfortable for the child's skin. This little applicator here could be found in the craft supply store in the stenciling section. It's great for making big circles, that you can make bubbles out of. You draw a fish with bubbles coming out of its mouth. It's also great if you use it slightly damp, to use as an applicator for your glitter on a finished design. Finally one thing you'll need plenty of are these. Cosmetic sponges! They come in triangles, circles, some people like to use the circles cut in half whatever your personal preference is. These are essential for doing full faces like Spider Man a tiger. They're also great for some special tricks that we can look at in another lesson. These are all the different tools that you can need to get started for face painting.
