Securing a Hook for Fly Tying

So, the first thing we're going to do is mash down that barb and put our fly in our vice. Take your pliers, put them right on the barb, we get a little tension and just push down. Sometimes we'll actually hear it break, but this one just actually kind of flattened the barb down. We want to mash that barb down to make it easier to release the fish but also it's a lot easier to release the fisherman if we happen to hook ourselves or one of our fishing buddies. So, we get that hook in the vice and get it just a little snug with the adjusters and go ahead and crank it down nice and tight back here in the back. Check and make sure the shank is fairly level. Got it in there nice and tight, so we are ready to tie.
