Blood Knots in Fly Fishing

The first line to line connection we're going to do is the Blood Knot. And it's a little bit more complicated that your average knot. Some people say the reason it's called the Blood Knot is because you sweat blood trying to tie it, but it's a really good knot especially if you're trying to attach two dissimilar size materials, like a heavier piece of leader to a lighter piece of leader. And what you're going to do is take your two ends, overlap them a ways, and you really want to pay attention to this connection here, where the two are crossing, because what you're going to do is wrap your first piece, one, two, three, three to five times depending on the thickness of the materials. The thicker the material is, the less wraps you have to made. So we're just going to do three here in the rope for a demonstration. And then we're going to take that tag in and stick it back between where the two pieces are coming together. Then we're going to take our other side and do the same thing. One, two, three times around and we're going to poke it back (get a little bit more tag there) we're going to poke that piece back through the same place as the other piece of line. But we want to make sure that goes the other direction, so we're just going to poke it right there next to the first one, and they're going in opposite directions, and that's critical. And when you tighten it, you just pull both sides evenly, and just sort of slide those loops toward each other, and when it's done, it's going to look like that. That's your Blood Knot.
