Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village and today we’re going talk about training dogs. And we’re working on teaching Tuffy this Yorkshire Terrier how to stay. Tuffy, come here. Now, Tuffy just discovered a squeaky toy up on the desk so this is going to be difficult, but it’ll be good for you to see how I get Tuffy to concentrate on me and on this command. Tuffers… come here… good boy… sit… good… down… good… Now at Taurus we don’t actually, down… good… we don’t actually use the work stay. Down… the stay is inherent in the command. Now I did not give him a treat a second ago because he popped right back up. Tuffy has been exhibiting what we call the popcorn dog maneuver where they’re up… down… up… down. We want to teach them to stay and it’s hard for a little Yorkshire Terriers to stay. They’re pretty spunky little guys. So what I’m going to do is get him reinforcement with the cheese and gradually increase the period of time in between the cheese, so he stays down. If he gets up I’ll just use a no reward marker no or anh that’s what I like to use to teach him that he has done the wrong thing and then I get him back down and reward him randomly longer periods of time. Tuffy is doing really, really well so I need to increase the level of distractions in the room, so that I can make sure he can stay down no matter what. So I’m just anh, down… that was a no reward marker and getting him back into the down, just moving tends to distract him, anh… now that’s a big distraction… sit… down… good. I’m going to go ahead and give him a treat for that because a little piece of cheese fell over here. That’s a tough one. Good… can intermittently mark that he’s doing the right thing and reward… good… now keep your eyes on Tuffy, I’m going to move around a little bit here… good… ump, down… now I marked him because he made nice eye contact, but then he broke his down so that’s why I marked that he did the wrong thing, got him back where he was supposed to be and rewarded him for it… good… very nice eye contact. Good… now that was very nice because Tuffy corrected himself. So let’s up the anti a little bit more here, here comes a big distraction… up… good… Now I’m going to wait a little while before I give him the treat this time. Okay. I am going to actually, amp … sit… down… good. As you can see, this ball is a huge distraction, you want to keep your training sessions short, sweet, and successful. So what I want to do with this ball at this point is use it as a reward for him staying… but not yet and it need to be on my terms down, not his… okay… so then I release him from his down and let him go after the thing he really wants. We’re going to have a lot of more work to do with Tuffy around the ball and especially the squeaky toys, but it’ll be worth it. So, that’s how to teach your Yorkshire Terrier to stay.
