Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village and today we’re going talk about training dogs. We are teaching this Yorkshire Terrier how to lay down. We have little Tuffy here and this Yorkshire Terrier is absolutely brilliant. We know that he’s very responsive to cheese as we just taught him how to sit, so we’re going to use the same method to teach him how to lie down. Good boy! Very nice attention… whenever your dog is paying this much attention to you, be sure to positively reinforce it especially if there are distractions around. So I’m going to grab my cheese, I’m going to use the food as a lure to get him to go down… good. So I don’t say the word until I’m about 99% sure he’s going to do the action, then I say the word and then I mark it with a good as soon as he does it. Okay... okay… good. Sit… good… down… good… excellent speed. Okay…Okay, I’m going to… good… sit… I’m just going to use a hand signal this time. Down… good… very nice. I’m going to actually get up a little bit higher now. Come here Tuffers… come here, I’m going to use my body to encourage him to come… sit… good… down… good… So there I tried to just use a little bit of body language to show what I wanted him to do, but he still needed the hand signal that also means he definitely still needs some random reinforcement with the treats. Okay… sit… good… I’m going to try the body language again though so I can get some progression towards just the verbal down… down... good… Okay… sit… down… He’s thinking about it… good… okay. Sit… down… good… He’s still needing the hand signal… Okay… sit… down… good. Now I’m not going to treat that because I want him to stay down at least for a second… down… good… very nice… So as you can see Tuffy is really, really good with going down to a hand signal, but we want to eventually get him where he’s responding just to a verbal signal. That’s really advanced for a day. I think he can get there. It’s just going to take some time for this Yorkshire Terrier to know how to lie down with just a verbal signal. Down… good boy.
