Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village and today we’re going to talk about training dogs. It’s time to teach little Tuffy our Yorkshire Terrier how to sit. When you’re teaching your Yorkshire Terrier how to sit, remember to be patient and do things incrementally, gradually building up the distractions around which he or she can perform. Little Tuffy, it’s very interesting smell. Now Tuffy I now really, really loves cheese. I’ve also tried working with a squeaky toy with Tuffy but that just gets him too excited. So we’re going to stick with food as a motivator. So to teach him how to sit, I’m going to use tiny, tiny little pieces of cheese they’re very, very small just to taste, good, good. Now he offered me that behavior, so I’m go ahead in mark it, very nice. Now, since I know that he has an idea that he should put his bottom on the ground in order to get the treat, I’m going to up the anti and actually say the word before his rear hits the ground and that’s how I can make sure he knows what the command is. Okay, sit … good. So I gave him a little visual signal there, but I’m not even sure if that was necessary. Okay, what a very responsive Yorkshire Terrier, sit … good. Now notice I did give a little visual signal there with my body, dogs are brilliant in picking up cues from us for what we want them to do. So, even when I’m on the ground with him because he’s so little, he’s picking up what I want him to do just by moving my body a little bit, good boy, come here, sit … good. Now he’s turned into little psychic puppy, good boy. I’m going to make this a little bit more difficult and stand up, so you just watch Tuffy… sit … good. If you could see my leg move, I moved forward just a little bit to show what I want him to do. No we’re going to start making the treat reinforcement random, okay, sit … good. Okay, sit … good, okay, sit good. I’ll give him the treat this time. Okay, I’m saying okay to try to get him to move, come here, sit … good. Tuffy is an excellent example of how to teach your Yorkshire Terrier how to sit.
