Pet Loss Counseling for Kids: Children's Book Resources

There are a lot of wonderful children's books about grief, about loss. Some of them are particular to the loss of a pet. This one right here talks about the loss of a cat and how a child emotionally responds to that loss and that experience. And then there's this book right here which actually recently had its 20th anniversary, talks about a leaf called Freddy. And it goes through Freddy's life, through the seasons and eventually until we get to the winter and Freddy's eventual falling off the tree. So it's actually a very beautifully written depiction about the life cycle. And it helps children to be thinking about questions, to be thinking about the cycle of life and how it's a very natural, normal part of life, death is. So there are some really wonderful books that can stimulate those kinds of conversations with your children. And then this one right here is more of a classic. This is from Mr. Rogers. It's called "When a Pet Dies." So again, specifically about the loss of a pet and there's also some books out there that are more geared towards adults coping with the loss of a pet. Also, helping adults to be able to better help their children, so there is a wealth of information out there if you check at your local library or book store.
