Pet Loss Counseling for Kids: Euthanizing Pets

In current situations you may determine that euthanasia is the most compassionate choice for your pet. I've had to make this decision with two dogs in the last few years and it is a very difficult decision to make. One of the things that I do recommend to consider if you have this opportunity is to have the veterinarian come to your home. This provides, either you can have friends, family whom ever would like to be with the dog or animal in their final moments. And I do recommend if the children are wanting to be present, to allow them to be present. I think it is important for them to understand what is happening to the best of their ability. The veterinarian can explain what the injection does and what to expect in terms of the animals response to that. But, I do think it gives the children an opportunity to say their final goodbyes, to be present, and to be able to give their pet love and affection right up to the last moments of their life. The other things that we've tried to do, it to create a very peaceful calm atmosphere for our pets. So it could be just again trying to provide a loving environment. Putting them on a soft bed, having music going, and again maybe choosing to have certain people available that are going to be wanting to spend those last few moments of the pets life.
