Setting Up Double Pointed Knitting

Hi. I'm Jeanette White on behalf of Expert Village and Piper's Quilts and Comforts in Sugar House. Today we're going to be doing double pointed knitting. Circular knitting. This is usually when you have a small circular thing like socks or mittens or gloves. And some knitters just prefer doing all of their circular knitting in this fashion as opposed to using circular needles. To begin with you're going to cast on all the stitches that you're going to need onto one needle. And you're going to need a set of these little rings. They come in a package of all different sizes. And you want to match the size of the ring to the size of your needle. We have 40 stitches here and there's a total of 5 needles. So eventually what we're going to do is have these 40 stitches divided up by 4. So 10 stitches on each needle and then one working needle. And we need the ring placed so that we can have a beginning and an ending spot. So this is how you set up the beginning of your double pointed knitting and in the next segment we'll do the actual distribution of these stitches onto these 4 needles.
