How to Knit Backwards

Hi. I'm Jeanette White on behalf of Expert Village and Piper's Quilts and Comforts located in Sugar House. Today we're going to be doing what's called knitting backwards. This is a really fun technique because normally when we were doing a stockinet stitch, which is what this is, we would knit down to the end of the row and then we would turn our work and purl back. With knitting backwards we're going to be purling but from the right side. So you won?t be turning your knit work over to accomplish your purl. I've knit down to the end of this row and I'm not going to flip my work. Now I'm going to insert my needle from the back, loop my yarn around and pull it through. This is a really fun technique to learn. And it gets very efficient. Whoops. Catch that stitch. And we go in the back, loop our yarn around and pull it through. Insert the needle into the back of the stitch. Yarn comes from back to front and pop your old stitch off. And you can see I haven't had to turn my work around to accomplish my purl row. This is a lot of fun to do and really can be a wonderful thing to do if you're doing fair aisle or you're doing intarsia. This makes it a lot easier because you're viewing your front side all the time that you're working. And that's how you knit backwards.
