Picking Up a Dropped Knitting Stitch with a Crochet Hook

Hi. I'm Jeanette White on behalf of Expert Village and Piper's Quilt's and Comforts and Sugar House. Today we're going to be talking about how to pick up a dropped stitch. Uh oh. You're knitting along and all of a sudden you realize you dropped a stitch. And boy this one really dropped. It's all the way down. There are two ways you can do this. We're going to do this one this time with a crochet hook. So what I'll do is locate the loop of the stitch that was dropped and I will insert a crochet hook into it. Now we're going to talk about ladders. You can see here these little bridges that should have been stitches actually but it forms like little rungs of a ladder that go up. So I'm going to get them kind of spread out so that they're not twisted on top of each other so that I can really see the order of them. I'm going to pick up the first one by inserting my crochet hook underneath the first ladder and I'm going to pull it through the loop. This is actually just a simple crochet chain stitch. Now I'm going to locate the second one, go underneath it just the way I did on the first one and pull it through. Do the same thing and just keep going up and before you know it you've picked up your dropped stitch. Now I'm back up to where I need to be and I haven't knitted this stitch yet so I'm going to drop it on to my left needle which is my to do needle. And then I can just go right on knitting my merry way. And that's the first technique of how you pick up a dropped stitch.
