Vertical Salvage Knitting Stitches

Hi I'm Jeanette White for Expert Village and Piper's Quilts and Comforts. Today I'm going to be showing you how to do a vertical salvage that looks very nice and finished. This is important on like the edges of a scarf, or up the front of a cardigan, so that we have this beautiful finished edge right here instead of the knots that you usually see which are so frustrating. This is very very easy to accomplish. What we're going to do is on the first stitch of every row, regardless of what the pattern says, we are going to slip as if to purl. So our yarn will be in the front. I'm going to insert my needle as if I were going to purl this first stitch and just slip it onto my right hand needle past the yarn between the two needles and then we're going to knit down to the end. The last stitch of every row is going to be knitted just the way it would be normally, even if you're on a purl row, that last stitch would be knitted. So we're getting close to the end here, and I can show you that we are going to just knit this last stitch, and then we're going to have this nice vertical salvage, and you won't have to go back later and try and do it with a crochet hook. So here we come to our last stitch, and I'm just going to knit that as I would normally. This is what this is going to produce is this beautiful braided edge, and then you don't have to worry about going back and trying to do some treatment. And that's how you do a vertical salvage.
