I have some very sad news to report. Vampira, star of nineteen fifties TV. has passed away at the age of eighty-six. Now Vampira was born in Finland in nineteen twenty-one, her name, Maila Nermi. She was actually the niece of the gold medal winning runner Pevo Nermi. She came to America when she was an infant, and traveled around the country where her father was lecturing on temperance. But when she became a young lady, she actually became a dancer with Errol Carrol's Vanities, and Mike Todd's program. Howard Hawks, the well known producer saw her and invited her to star in a Hollywood film. However, because she was frustrated and disillusioned by one delay after another, she walked out on the film and then rejoined the on stage shows. At a masquerade party she decided to don the Morticia outfit from the Charles Addams character, and it was a great idea. She's wearing a skin tight black dress, long black nails, heavy lipstick, dark eyebrows and a black wig. She's normally a blond. Not only did she win first prize, but Vampira was born because a local affiliate of ABC TV. channel seven in Los Angeles invited her to host a series of horror and sci-fi films that were low budget in nature. As far as we know it was the very first such host, and inspired many others such as yours truly. She's on for one season, nineteen fifty-four to fifty-five, very successful. For example she was judging contests, she had been written up in a number of magazines. She had fan clubs sprouting up all over the world. Then she appeared in the nineteen fifty-nine much maligned Edward film, "Plan Nine from Outer Space" starring Bela Lugosi. Bela was a real fan of hers, but tragically he died just two weeks into shooting. After that film and a few other small roles, Maila's career really tapered off. She did engage in the painting of her Vampira portrait and sold it for some big bucks at one time. And she was involved in a lawsuit against Cassandra Peterson's Elvira character, but lost. She was living in Hollywood when she died of natural causes. Vampira, we will miss you, but thank you for the inspiration. And now, for Expert Village, until next time. May the power of the cosmos be with you! Yes! Yes! Yes!
