Shifting Your Weight in Tai Chi Postures

There's a lot of weight shifting that goes on in Tai Chi. The focus is that you are thinking about where your weight is and how it needs to move in order for you to get to the next posture. Start with your feet at shoulder width apart and gently shift your weight from one foot to the next. Like I said, it needs to be done slowly so that you can spend time and allow your mind to think about how your weight is distributed. Shift to one, bringing the foot up, shifting back. All of the weight is now over my left foot, allowing me to drag the right foot to where it needs to go. I still have the weight over the left and I gently set my foot down and shift the weight. Now all of the weight is over the right foot, I am dragging the foot down. Still have all the weight here. Give yourself some time. Don't do these exercises quickly. Make sure that you set your foot exactly where you'd like to go and then gently pull your weight back to that foot. Keep it nice and smooth and remember every time: breathe. I'm going to breathe in. Then I am going to breathe out as I move. Breathe in. You may need to hold it and use Level Two then breathe out. Excellent.
