Death Tax Return Tips

"Hi John, I've been going over some things regarding the passing of your mother, and I'm very sorry to have heard about that. One thing, in particular, because she was in the convalescent home and she was in the deductible status there because of the need for the medical care, your medical expenses, I wanted you to know that we can allocate them among the several different tax returns that we're going to be involved with. So, I'll get back with you and talk to you more about it, but I want you to do a good job of gathering those medical records. Thanks. Bye." When a person passes away, the medical expenses that you pay can be deducted either on the final return of the individual, or the fiduciary return which is filed for the income after the person passes, or on the estate tax return. So you can look at the situation and see which of the returns it is most beneficial. This would be on the death of a single person, or on the final death of a married couple, the survived. I'm Tom Choisnet, enrolled agent, and I hope I've helped you a little bit in the arduous job of handling taxes regarding decedents, and, in this particular case, regarding medical expenses. Thank you.
