Recognizing 6/8 Timing in Music

Hi I'm Austin McBride here with Expert Village. Today I'm going to show you how to recognize 6/8 timing in music. 6/8 timing is pretty common, it's especially popular in the 50's or 60's love ballets. I'll show you a brief example really quickly to show you what it sounds like, and then I'll kind of review the sounds so we can understand exactly what's been going on. And away we go. So as you're hearing it's going, 1,2,3,4,5,6; 1,2,3,4,5,6; 1,2,3,4,5,6; 1,2,3,4,5,6; 1,2,3,4,. It's following this counts, these repeating counts of 6. And with each 6 count, I'm changing cords because it's a very easy way to understand it. However, really what it's saying is just the 8th note is getting 6 counts per measure. So that's how you recognize 6/8, which can also be referred to as 3/4, they're very similar. And that's that.
