How to Photograph Playing Animals

While it may be difficult to shoot my dog at rest, it's very easy to get her going and taking pictures of her at play. It's not too hard to rile her up, get her to jump up, do little tricks. . . high five! Maybe she can speak for us - (dog barks). Oh yeah! Go around, around, around! Okay, that's not happening. Lay down. Sit! Sit! With my dog, I can get her to race around, jump over things. If she's feeling spry, because she's a little bit old, I can get her to roll over. Those can be really fun, great interactive pictures. Especially if your client has a child that's really close to the dog, they can be a lot of fun to get playing Frisbee or catch pictures. Being really playful with the animal helps them keep their energy up, so that they're excited and you can catch these moments. It's also really important for an animal that's moving around a lot to be captured with a strobe or a flash, because they're moving so much, unless you're intentionally going for the blur of the animal running by, the flash can stop their action, and freeze them in some pretty unique poses.
