when you're shooting on location like a beach or a park or even someone's house you really need to take in to account how the background is effecting your portrait now there could be distracting things like trees in funny places or maybe other people if you're down on a beach interrupting your background but you also need to look at how the light is effecting your background high noon light can be very contrasty and not be too flattering for your animal so when you're looking for a good location think about what will be appearing in your background especially with the pet that's moving around also what your lighting quality is going to be on those locations in general you want to shoot in the shade on a sunny day so that you're getting a lot of reflective light bouncing and filling in on the pet but you're not getting too much harsh direct light or if it's a cloudy day you may have more of an ability to move around in your location and get some really nice shots but just keep that in mind when you're choosing your spot
