now depth to field is something I usually talk about in my more advanced photo workshops but it can really make a regular snapshot of your pet appear to be more professional now a lot of the compact digital cameras have the same ability as the professional cameras but basically there are a couple ways to get a shorter depth of field and what that means is only a small part of the image is in focus and usually a larger part of the background goes out of focus which brings the viewers like what they're most interested in looking at to probably the eyes or whatever it is that you choose to be the central point of focus now it's very easy to do this number one you need to have your appature opened up all the way so whatever that is for your particular camera and your lens 2 8th is one of the better options if your lens has that ability but just open it up as much as you can and then the idea is you have lot of light coming in so you don't need to have your shutter open for a very long time and that allows only a small portion of the image to be in focus with an animal I highly recommend that that's the eyes but maybe they have an interesting pattern on their foot maybe you want to zoom in on their favorite toy but you can do some very cool things and have more of that artistic look for your portraits
