You may also need a seam ripper or just a razor if its easier for the individual to cut seams that way, maybe a ruler, like a metal one, not just a tape measure, bobbins, and depending on what kind of projects you'll be making, you may want to look into getting a rotary cutter and a self-healing mat to cut on.

Sewing: Necessary Supplies
Hi! I’m Candi Cane-Canncel on behalf of expertvillage.com. This topic is your basic selling supplies. So we’ve learned how to thread the machine now we need to know the items you’re going to need to get sewing. First we’re going to start with scissors, I like to have a variety because you’re going to need one good pair for fabric that you use just for fabric, another pair for paper where you’re going to use for cutting out your patterns and a third pair is a small scissors that’s pointed and this is used for either embroidery or cutting your threads off and you also can use it when you venture into button holes, a lot of machines the way the button holes are you’re going to have to cut it open so you want something very pointy and sharp and just be sure to keep your scissors sharpened. You’re also going to need a variety of pins, they don’t really vary too much from fabric to fabric you just want a series of small ones and also larger ones. You’re going to be needing a measuring tape. A tweezers are a great idea especially if your nails are kind of long for pulling up thread and holding the needle while you’re threading, you know different applications. A series of marking pens and pencils. And when it comes to the feet you’re going to need a few different kinds and most sewings is going to be done with the zigzag foot, it’s just your basic foot that you’re going to be using straight stitches, but you’re also going to want to get yourself a zipper foot and a zipper foot varies very slightly from machine to machine, but basically it’s just a long skinny center with two holes on either side for the needle to go through. And then another foot that is really handy is a button hole foot and this is just it slides back and forth we kind of use it as a guide to create your button holes. The last thing is thread and these are the basic supplies that you need to get sewing. For more info on this topic feel free to check out my website it’s candiland.com.
