How to Train an Italian Setter to Come When Called

Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village, and we’re going to work with a Bracco Italiano, also known as an Italian setter. Now we’re going to work on teaching this Bracco Italiano or Italian Setter to come. Now she is pretty intent on me, but she’s not sure whether or not I have the hedgehog, so I’m going to just try giving her the command in backing up to see if she will come. Now an important point, I have a long line on her. I just simply don’t want her to escape, but these long lines even though they’re very cumbersome, can be really helpful teaching your dog to come. I often times like to wander around the park and just let them drag this, calling them back to me from time to time. If you need to you can just step on this for safety. Bella, come, good girl, come, good girl. So I’m rewarding her each time. Oh! Now I’ve got her attention. I’m just going to play with her a little bit to get her excited. Come, now, good girl, yeah, so I was just using my body language and some clapping there, clapping a little, yip, yip, yip sounds really help dogs learn to come. You may be tempted to grab the long line and reel your dog in, but try to avoid that in any circumstance, because you want coming to you to be a really positive thing. Now a hunting dog like this Italian setter tends to want to check in with people a lot. So capitalize on that especially when your Bracco Italiano is a puppy, that way you can teach her how to come in a positive way.
