How to List References on a Resume

Hi! My name is Tina Buechler from Business Growth Training, and I’m here today on behalf of expertvillage.com. In this clip, I’d like to talk about your references. Although your references aren’t actually part of your resume, references are a key component because when an employer asks for references, the purpose of them for asking for those references is that those references will validate the information on your resume, and will validate the information that you provided in the interview. So, when you have your list of references, it’s very important that your references know specifically what you have put on your resume and what information you have provided in the interview. When you create your reference list you should use the same font and format the you use for your resume. It should have your name and identifying information at the top of the page. Your references should be type written with telephone numbers and you should include the relationship this person has with you. If I list perhaps Joe Smith on my references, please indicate that he is a former co-worker or a former supervisor when I worked at ABC Company. This helps the employer determine, when they call Joe, what part of my resume they’re going to focus on and what kinds of skills and abilities that Joe will be able to validate based upon his relationship with me and what company he worked with. When we’re providing our references, key point, we’re trying to validate our resume and the information we provided on our resume. We need to give a copy of our resume to our references, so our references have the material that we have supplied so that they know what specific material they need to talk about. Your references need to be done in the same format and with the same letterhead essentially as your resume so the employer is very clear that these references apply to this individual. After you’ve had an interview, you need to make a quick call to your references and let him/her know that they might receive a call from the employer and you need to let the reference know what you talked about in the interview. All of this is part of just improving your marketing package, which is of course the whole purpose of your resume.
