How to List Skills on a Resume

Hi! My name is Tina Buechler from Business Growth Training, and I’m here today on behalf of expertvillage.com. In this clip, I want to talk about the second part on your resume, which is your profile. It could be called a profile; some people call it highlight of skills, highlights of qualification skills. Doesn’t really matter what you call it, you just need a section right off the bat, right after your name that really highlights your skills and abilities. It has been proven that most employers take 1 to 2 minutes to read a resume. It’s that initial perusal of the resume to determine do I read further. It’s an initial screening. When we read something, we start at the top of the first page and go down. As our interest is lost, we don’t read as much so far later down in the document. So, right after your name you need a profile, a highlight of the key skills that you have to offer. In this section you need how many relevant years of experience you have, any various significant accomplishments, key educational components that you have that would be beneficial for the position that you are applying for, and perhaps even include a comment to a reference to your values or how you wish to be seen within this place of employment. This section has anywhere from 4 to 7 points. Their whole purpose is to generate interest. When you are looking for a position, you have to think if an employer read these 4 to 7 points, would he/she be immediately interested and count me into the “read further pile.” That’s your goal of that little profile. To put strong, strong statements about skills, abilities, attitudes, and education that make you and ideal candidate for the position that you are applying for. Very important, it is the number one marketing part of your resume. You’ll validate all of those key points later in your resume, but this section is interest generating. Knock them over the head with just how great you are, and how your skills and ability match this position. That is the purpose of the profile.
