How to Pick Hiking Poles

Hi, I'm Albert Hedgepeth with Expert Village and today we're going to talk about the importance of selecting good hiking poles. As you know a lot of people will probably grab a stick out of the woods right as they enter, pick it up and start walking. Hiking sticks have been around for a long time. They're not only there to keep you from tripping and falling, but I guess the bigger point is why can a deer travel further than a human in a day? He's got four legs. The importance of hiking poles, therein. These poles are not only adjustable to different heights to fit different length people, they're also spring loaded which allows some of the shock from each step and each plant to be absorbed directly through the pole. They also have a spike on the end which allows them to get a good grip. There are also snow cups that you can place on the tip of these for alpine regions. They have a cork grip that fits your hands. They also have a strap that you can place your hand which is almost like a sling which allows freedom of movement with the pole without actually putting your hand on it. A lot of times, you're literally just walking the pole out. Whenever you're going downhill, poles are very important. They can save your knees a lot of anguish. Whenever I hike the trail, one of the biggest things that saved me was these guys. Whenever you're going downhill your knees take a lot of impact and it doesn't always feel good, but with these poles, you can rest a lot of the weight on your shoulders and on your hands and you can, it will hold your weight. The importance of poles is the fact that not only it takes the weight off your body and the impact off your body, but it also allows you the mobility of four limbs.
