Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village. Today we’re going to talk about training golden retrievers. We’re working the Bodie, the golden retriever here, and we’re going to teach him to lie down. We discovered in the last video that this is a very responsive dog and he’s very food motivated. So, we’re going to use the food to show him what we what him to do. Bodie… good. Now I started with saying his name to get his attention, and see how long it took him to finally pay attention. Got to be patient with dog training. He is very intent on someone walking by. So, I’m going to give him a little help to get him into the sit command. Sit… good… sometimes just moving your body around a little bit is a lot of help. Bodie… good… I’m showing the food and take his nose straight to the ground. Down…good. And then I’ll mark it when he’s all the way down. That was beautiful. As I did with the sit, I’m going to show you the impression of how your training will go, in just this two minute video. Remember to be patient when you’re working with your own golden retriever, especially if he or she is a puppy. Okay. So we’ve got him going down pretty nicely our first try with food as a lure. Sit… so, here… good. Notice that I needed to go backward a little bit there and give him a little help. I’m going to try just using a hand signal, down… good… very nice, up, down, good. Oh! Beautiful, I’m getting a quick response, and now I want to release him before gets up. Okay… perfect… sit. Now we’ll just try a little body language and see what happens. Down… good… down, good… down, good. Now see how he is pawing at me. This is what call the cute technique. He’s testing me to see what he can get away with or he’s exhibiting some nervousness. It doesn’t matter which one this it is, when he is playful like this. We just want to teach him to be a little more serious about training. It doesn’t mean training is not fun. It simply means that it should be on your terms instead of his. Down… good… very nice, okay… down, good, okay. So I’m making the body language less and less. Bodie, good, down, up, sit, good… down, good, down…, good, okay. So we’ve got a good down. We definitely need to work on the stay.
