Prevent Your Dog from Barking at the Front Door: Part 2

Hi! I am Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village and today we are going to talk about training dogs. We are about to start part two of teaching your dogs how to behave at the front door. Now we have gone through how to desensitize and working on beginning to counter condition these dogs to the sound of the knock and the doorbell. Now I want to teach them what to do when somebody actually is coming in the door. So these dogs know someone is there, they are pretty excited, but they are paying more attention to me, which I am going to reward them for. This dog in particular loves to jump up and down a lot, so watch how I use my body. I am going to tell them to sit and teach them that what they get rewarded for when the person comes in the door. Now if they get up before the person comes in, I am going to actually close the door. Come on in, good, good, excellent. Now I want it to be controlled when the person actually pets the dogs. Sit, so there I am just using some body blocks to keep the dogs away from what they want and to encourage them to sit. Alright, Michael, can you pet Zuke please good girl, excellent. See how much attention I am getting from this dog, this one is going to be a little harder, Michael go ahead and pet Markie, she gets up, pull away, now you can pet her because she is sitting, good girl, good girl. Now you can see how hard it is for this dog, sit, to keep her bottom on the ground, she is constantly trying to get up. This is the type of dog that is really important to work with to keep her from jumping on people at the door. Use whatever you have to set your dogs up to succeed. The vast majority of dogs definitely need to be unleashed during the first 40, 50, 60 repetitions of this exercise, but remember setting them up to succeed also means that if the pizza guy comes and you are not ready with your leash or treats whatever, then do not set your dog up to fail by answering the door, put him away first, and then wait until you are controlling the variables in this situations, so you can teach them what you want them to do rather than getting mad at them when they do not do the right thing.
