Hi! I am Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village and today we are going to talk about training dogs. We are going to talk about how to teach Shira to stay. First thing I want to do, good girl, very nice, I praised her because she offered a very nice sit there, and that was very polite. We are going to get her into a down, because that is the easiest way to show somebody how to teach a dog to stay, down, good, very nice, so she is over on a haunch, there we go, good girl. So the best way… there are several different ways to teach your dog to stay, what works for your dog maybe different from what works for another dog. Some dogs, you can actually use your body language or even some gentle but quick physical manipulation to show the dog that you want them to stay in the down. The other thing you can do is every time they get up use a no reward marker, show them what you want them to do again and then in either case you want to continuously reinforce in staying down with the treat. One thing you can do with a lot of dogs who really, really like games or toys also is make them wait longer and longer for getting to play with the toys especially squeaky toys, dogs love them. Now you notice, I did not use the word stay. At Taurus we are just keeping it as simple and elegant as we possibly can. Sit and down means that is what the dog does until we say, otherwise we release them. Other people like to use the word stay, and even use a hand signal, that is fine, it seems to help the owner as much as the dog. So Shira is being too good. We need to spice things up a little bit and challenge her. So I am going to start moving around her a little bit, good girl, she’s being very good, that is not much of a distraction, good, down, good. Now notice that I used a no reward marker the second she got up, I tried to use some body language just very, very gently, physically got her back into a down, good, very nice, good, very nice. Now we really going to up here by introducing a toy. Now what I am going to do is use some food as I throw the toy to reward her, down, good, for staying down. Very nice, so you can gradually build up the distractions until your dog can do a good solid down stay. Now here is the finale, down, good, okay. Now notice that she Shira really wanted to get up and she didn’t. That means the session was successful, good girl.
