Letting Pottery Set

DAVID GIBSON: In this next step, we're going to talk about letting our pot sit. I've talked a little bit about timing, then again I'll talk some more about it. I've gone ahead and carved on our platter here to show you what some of those marks look like through there. However, I may let something set up before I make some marks in it. I'd let this piece get a little harder. You can see that it has set up a little bit more and much less likely to get some of the ribbons of clay get in and interrupt some of the slip decoration I had. So I probably would let the piece set up a little bit, let it dry, let the shine go away from it before I would go ahead and make some marks. Here's a platter that I threw the other day where I've come ahead and carved in it at a little bit later stage. So, timing is key; knowing when to address the clay.
