Making a Platter in Pottery

DAVID GIBSON: In this clip of advanced pottery, I'm going to be making a platter. I want to show you a pot that I have made and what we're going to try to make there is a platter, so instead of opening the piece up, I'm going to flatten it out, like a pancake on the wheel and really push down, bear down, use some strength. Again, be confident. Don't go too fast or too slow with the wheel head. Really push down here, staying on center. Using water if you want, keep it drier if you want--however you do. I'm using my thumb--again, my hands are really all over the clay. I'm touching every little piece of this clay, smooshing it down, and making a big pancake with this. I'm going to throw a trim of foot on this pot later, so I want to leave a nice, big base for this platter. So again, making this into a pancake.
