How to Fit a Head Halter on a Dog You're Training

Hi! I am Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training for Expert Village and today we are going to talk about training dogs. Hi! We are working with Cody here who has had an issue with ignoring her owner when she gave commands. Her owner often has to give them several times. So we have been working on speeding Cody up by luring her into a down, teaching her that there is a marker word that means a treat is coming and then in the last video, we talked about going from continuous to intermittent reinforcement. Now we are going to try to get Cody to respond just to a hand signal with very little food. Now in reality, this may take days, weeks, even months. We are going to do what we can in a couple of minutes, but Cody has been doing so well, I think she will shine. Cody, sit, ?? (0045), sit. Now that was very instructive. I used a no reward marker, because I gave the word sit, and she was instantly distracted by someone on the street, notice how I also used my body to help her know how that I wanted her to sit, and then I was able to mark that she did the right thing finally. Alright, let us go back to the down, so Cody knows there is a possibility of a treat coming, but she is not sure. The first time I start this set of exercises, I will do the first one with a treat, down, good, okay. Now we are going to try it without giving food, down, good, okay, sit down, good, okay, very nice, very nice, that was a freebie by the way, good girl. Remember food is a salary and a little bonus every once in a while does not hurt. Down, good, okay, down, good. Cody is doing so well here and I am going to go ahead and start trying to get her to respond just to some body language and not that hand signal. Okay, down, good, notice my hand was in front of her, but she was responding more to me bending over than just the hand signal. Okay, down, good, outstanding, okay, down, good, random reinforcement, okay, sit down, good, okay, down, good, okay, Cody is a movie star.
