By the time your child has mastered most or all of the techniques and the rules that we've taught so far in this series and in the kindergarten reading series, they will probably be ready for real books and you want to introduce a lot of real books because at this point their excitement about learning will really take off as they start reading things that really interest them. You can pick up extra books on topics they like. Now you want to do a lot of books, go through a lot of books per week and therefore you probably want to get them fairly inexpensively. What I found to be the best ways include thrift stores, I found a thrift store where you actually get books for a quarter each, you can use friends or relatives or neighbors that can give you hand me downs maybe if they have older children or the best of all, the neighborhood library. If you're going to use the library I found it's best to set aside one day a week where you're going to go the same day, same time every week and take out a set number of books. Ten is probably a good number for the level they're at and even if they don't get through all ten, bring those ten back and renew any that you want to still work on or even if they want to read it again and pick some new ones or whatever, but come home again with ten and bring ten back. Every time you go to the library you have the same number. Every time you come home you have the same number and that will avoid the problems. You don't want to get on the bad side of your local neighborhood library when they're offering you so many good resources.
