How to Measure Before Installing Shelves

Hey, it’s Dominic with Expert Village and now I’m going to show you guys how to measure this wall. Well, I know what my wall is but you have to measure your wall, this is my wall. So, got my goggles on her of course. You know you could never know the tape measure springs go crazy sometimes. So here I’m going to figure out just the wall, it’s 70 inches wide, so I’m going to find my center half of 70 is 35 so where’s my pencil… where the heck is my pencil? There it is, jumped out of my ear. So 35 is my center, so I’m going to mark my center at 35 and the smaller shelf that I have here in this case is an 18 inch shelf, so what I need to do is consider I’m putting the shelf center okay and the smaller shelf that I have is 18 inches wide I need to go out 9 inches on each side from each center. So here will be 9 inches here bring it out over here and I got my 9 inches there. Okay so I have my 18 inch section so when I put my shelf up it will actually be within the guidelines there so that will work out nice. So what I’m going to do now is I’m going to put my bracket and get my bracket ready to be up there, so depending on where you know how high you want to put your bracket, now in this case I’m only going to be installing on putting a VCR DVD player two VCRs and two DVDs player, a Sony Playstation and I’m putting a you know a kind like a smaller entertainment center which is going to hang over the television that way my television gets bigger or smaller I can lower the shelves or however I want to do it. So in this case here I’m going to drop this about 6 inches from the ceiling.
