Payment From Music Royalties

ANTONIO NEAL: Hey, this is Antonio Neal with Artistic Soul Entertainment on behalf of Expert Village. Today, we're going to talk about copyrighting a song and also publishing the song. Now, let's talk about how do I get paid now that my song has been cut on a record. You may say, "Who pays me, the record label or the performance rights society?" Well, guess what, it's your lucky day. You say, "Why?" Well, this is why. Both, you get paid from both entities. You get paid from the record label according to how many records they sold and you get paid from your performance rights society based on how much air play and the percentage of your song. Don't you feel good about that? For your $45, for taking out five or 10 minutes in registering your song, you get to have--because of digital music nowadays, you get to have a lifetime flow of income. Now, it might be five cents a month or it might $2 every quarter, but think about it, the moment that song really hits it big, say, a song goes out or a record sales a million copies. Do you know from a record that sells a million copies, there's $910,000 worth of just writing royalties. That's not included in your performance rights, just writing royalties. So if you have one song, that's worth $91,000 and if you split that song in the middle, that's still $45,500. So, I think $45,500 is worth a $45 investment, wouldn't you agree? I think so. So guess what, take time and register your song. Hey, make sure your stuff is turned in to the label. If they have your correct information, your address, your social security number, where your grandma live, your dog address and GPS system, how many kids are with you, and make sure your stuff is turned into BMI, ASCAP, and all these things because I can tell you this, if an album has sold a million copies, it's probably getting a hundred of thousands of spins so that's an additional tens of thousands of dollars that'll be coming in your way, all right? So, take care of business, and also, take me to lunch when you're done.
