DAVE TYLER: Foul-shooting violations are a common occurrence in basketball games. The basic rule is when the ball leaves the shooter's hands, it has to touch the rim before the defenders can come in to attempt to rebound the miss. The proper mechanic for a lane violation is no whistle but--it's called a delayed call, where the hand would come out from the side until the shot is taken. If the shot is good and the shooting team violates then we have no basket. However, on a delayed call, if the shot is good and the defending team is in violation, the basket would count. So you don't punish the shooter if he makes the shot. What we're going to look at here, we have a shooter here and we have a player on the center block, and the first one we're going to see is the proper way to come in. The ball has to hit the rim before the rebounder can attempt to get in on the shot. So there we have the appropriate time and the defender will come in. The other shot--the other--the next one is going to be when the shooter comes in or the defender comes in early to try to rebound before it hits the rim. And you could see that would be a whistle and delayed call and then we'd actually shoot that again. The third violation is if the shooter tries to attempt a shot to get--to try to lure the people on the block and he would fake the shot and--yeah, fake the shot. We're going to fake it here and the defender comes in. That would be a violation on the shooter because he's trying to fake out a shot. And then the fourth common violation you'll see is the shooter would come in early so he will shoot the ball and follow it in before it hits the net. This also would be a violation of the shooter, and the defending team would get the basketball.
