Signaling Double Dribble in Basketball

DAVE TYLER: Double dribble is a common dribbling violation. There's no personal foul. But double dribble is simply when the dribbler is dribbling the basketball and both hands come in contact with the ball at the same time. The double dribble mechanic: stop the clock, point to the opposite way. So our dribbler's got the ball, playing him defense, picks it up with two hands and starts his dribble again; either way, both times will be considered double dribble. Or if the dribbler starts his dribble, picks it up and then starts again that would also be considered a double dribble. It's a real common violation. The problem with calling double dribble is if the defender picks the ball up and then the ball slapped out of his hands, now the dribbler can start his dribble again because the ball--he's lost contact with the ball. It's gone onto the floor and the defender caused the contact. So here we got a stoppage, slap, now he could dribble again because it's a new fresh dribble for the dribbler.
