When it comes to foil the best defense is actually a good offensive. You want to drill into your brain that each parry is an opportunity for a Riposte. Any attack that follows a parry is called a Riposte. You want to really get in the habit because of right of way and every time you make a parry you have claimed right of way for yourself so that you have a great opportunity and a little bit more time to Riposte so you want to get in the habit of Riposting quickly after your parries and we are going to demonstrate a couple of items there so a simple parry Riposte, Syria thrusts, I parry and then come in for the attack after having established right of way. Sometimes your parry Ripostes become almost blended into the same move so let's say that Syria is going to come in for a thrust here. I can parry her with a circular parry at the same time as I move in to a thrust so that the move in action is still a little show but if she thrusts I come for a parry and Riposte so you can see that she extended her arm first establishing right of way but because I deflected her blade and came in for an attack afterwards it was a Riposte, the right of way was mine. It means a lot of things but if Syria had managed to hit after I had made contact with her blade the right of way still would have been mine then the touch is mine. So, Riposte, important. Every time you parry think about what your opportunities are for a Riposte and you will find it is a really useful tool in foil fencing for scoring touches.
