How to Play a French Drum Grip with Rods

JOEL SIEGEL: Alright. So, we talked about our rods on our snare drum and just the myriad different colors and textures you can get there. The hi-hat is no different. So, I'm going to start with the French grip, we'll do the up, full and down stroke, starting with the up with the rods. This is playing on top of the cymbal. You'll see it's a real tiny sound. When you're using the rods on the hi-hat in particular, to me, this evokes images of raindrops on a window pane. You can get that--a nice--combine the rim and the hi-hat produce for just that kind of that prickling sound a little bit. It's a nice fragile sound.
