JOEL SIEGEL: What I want to do now is illustrate explicitly the difference between the sounds that you're going to get from the drum when using a hot rod and the sounds you're going to get from the drum when using a stick. So, I'll just play for you a couple of down strokes in the American grip with the stick. Now, listen to the hot rod. Even on the maybe weaker tinny speakers of your computer, you can hear the difference in the sound. The stick has a lot more body. The rod is really playing with the sound of the skins, both the top and the bottom. I'm just trying to illustrate-that the context you're going to using the two different types of sticks and the sticks themselves, you'll be using with a lot of music. When you want to bring that volume down, you're playing in a small room, wherever it is, you're going to want to use these rods to help add texture and bring down the dynamics.
